After a warm December Mt. Washington and The Presidential Range are now white with snow. Lets hope for some good Alpine Glows at sunrise like this image from years ago. It is easier shooting sunrises in December or January because the sunrise is after 7AM, than later in the winter when the sunrise is closer to 6AM. In December and January the sun is lower in the sky. This enables the sun’s rays to light up the mountains with more dramatic light than later in the winter when the sun is higher in the sky.

This shot of Mt. Lafayette and The Franconia Range was taken from the top of Cannon Mountain Ski Area in New Hampshire’s Franconia Notch State Park. I love working with snow covered trees because it helps keep the foreground clean. Cannon Mountain ski area is famous for many days of snow covered trees because it’s summit is over 4,000 feet tall. This elevation and it’s location keeps moisture on the summit causing rime frost to form on the trees.

This Black and White photo of the Mount Washington Hotel and Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range in Bretton Woods, NH. toke several hours to get. When I arrived at my location the clouds from the previous storm had yet to clear The Presidential Range. Past experience told me that waiting should give me the photo I wanted. I waited and eventually the clouds started to clear the summit of Mt. Washington giving me many different scenes as they lifted. The wind was also pushing them from left to right and I would shot when they gave me a composition I wanted.
